Character Descriptions
MARTIN VANDERHOF-60-70s. Referred to by everyone as Grampa, he is the patriarch of the house. Lending sage wisdom and practical advice to everyone from his own family to strangers that wonder in. He used to be a regular working man, until he realized he didn’t enjoy it, so he left the rat race to devote himself to pursuits of interest and encouraging those around him to do the same.
ALICE SYCAMORE-Early 20s. The only one in the family with a “real job,” Alice knows her family is quirky and loves them for it. But, she also stands out as the one in the family who wants a traditional life.
PENELOPE SYCAMORE-40-50s. Penny is the mother of Essie and Alice and is hospitable and nurturing. She pours every ounce of herself into her artistic passions…until she discovers a new one, and then she pours herself into that one. Honest and at times a little blunt, she doesn’t so much run the home as run with it.
PAUL SYCAMORE-40-50s. Penelope’s husband. He is singularly focused on the manufacturing of fireworks, which causes him to be a bit aloof to the rest of the world.
ESSIE CHARMICHAL-20s. An aspiring ballerina, Essie also makes candy that her young husband, Ed sells in the city. Sweet and optimistic, she is also encouraging and wide-eyed.
ED CHARMICHAL-20s. Like his wife, Essie, Ed is forthright, optimistic and assumes the best. He plays the xylophone and works a printing press as his hobbies, but mostly dotes on Essie.
DE PINNA-Over 40, but indeterminate. Mr. De Pinna made an ice delivery one day and got roped into the Sycamore family’s madness and never left. He now assists Paul with building fireworks. A little eccentric but unassuming and agreeable.
RHEBA-30s. The Sycamore’s live in housekeeper, she is also Donald’s girlfriend. She isn’t from the Sycamore’s world and but is loyal to them, all while being in amazement of them.
DONALD-30s. Rheba’s boyfriend who likes to come around and lend a hand every now and then, Donald is just as amused and befuddled with the Sycamores as Rheba, but is not above involving himself in their affairs, when the need arises.
TONY KIRBY-20s. Alice’s love interest and the son of a wealthy bank executive. Confident and charming, Tony appreciates the Sycamore family and bears a hidden desire to abandon his father’s stuffy business.
KIRBY-40-50s. Tony’s father and Alice’s boss. Mr. Kirby works too much and has the ulcers to show for it, but he won’t be moved from the way things are supposed to be done.
MRS. KIRBY-40-50s. Tony’s mother. Quiet and demure and doesn’t really seem to have much of a strong opinion about much, but what she doesn’t say gets buried.
BORIS KOLENKHOV-30-40s. A loud, brash, Russian immigrant who tutors Essie in ballet.
GAY WELLINGTON-40s. A drunk has-been Broadway star.
GRAND DUCHESS OLGA KATRINA-50-60s. She is the cousin Czar Nicolas of Russia who was killed along with his family in the Russian Revolution. Olga had to flee to the United States for safety, but has since lead a much less affluent existence. Her humbled status has not diminished her regal presence. She’s also a great cook.
HENDERSON-30-50s. An IRS agent who pays a visit to collect past taxes from Grampa, and finds himself at his wit’s end.
FBI AGENTS
